You Can't Direct The Wind But You Can Adjust The Sails

Dear Friend,

Today I would like to provide you with a new perspective and new insights to help you define effective marketing strategies and tactics that will insure the growth of your online business.

First of all, let's take a look at the meaning of the word "metamorphosis" and how it can possibly be of interest to marketing.

Metamorphosis: Noun (plural metamorphoses - say metuh´mawfuhseez) … “the change of form, structure, or substance, as transformation; the structural or functional modification of a plant organ or structure during its development.”

Applied to marketing, this does clearly suggest a process by which we can possibly transform ourselves and adapt to an ever-changing and complex environment or marketplace with the clear intent to become and remain successful.

It's all about our personal growth and our ability to react to the multiple challenges of life in general and the modern world in particular.

In a way, I am tempted to say it's all about the metamorphosis of marketing tadpoles into leaping frogs!

Identifying and aligning all the pieces of this complex puzzle takes time, quite a bit of thinking and determination. It also requires that we constantly reconsider our approach and refine our strategies. Transforming ourselves has been a necessity since the dawn of humanity and it is not any different in the modern world: if we want to stay in business, we have to evolve.

Let's keep in mind that it is us who have to adapt to the environment or the marketplace and not the other way around.

This is a hard fact, it cannot be argued upon: no one can expect to win at any game without first knowing the rules and principles.

Life is a serious game where it is possible to have a lot of fun. It has strict rules though. First we need to study the rules then comes the fun. Likewise, marketing is a serious game where it is possible to have a lot of fun. Again, first we need to study and master the rules.

It takes time to fully master all the different rules and principles of life - the Great Pyramids of Giza were not built in a day after all.

It is a visible sign reminding us all of the astounding results that can be accomplished with vision, determination and persistence.

This is exactly the same behavior we want to apply in our marketing if we are to get results of the same magnitude.

What we have to do is study the founding principles of success and get better at applying them effectively in the real world: on the marketing battlefield.

It's a fact: we need to get better at mastering marketing strategies that lead to higher levels of success.

Regardless of our personal level of success, the #1 critical success factor to accomplish this is determined by our ability to identify and process the very information that will give us the leverage we lack to reach the next step and enable greater success.

The most efficient and fastest way to increase our success is through the adoption of behavioral patterns that will create more and more success for us. It pretty much works like a snowball effect: the first step is to get it started to the best of our knowledge and abilities.

It can always be improved in the course of time. That decision is ours to make. No one else can make it for us.

In my monthly newsletter, I discuss how it all works: how states of mind and behavioral patterns are intimately connected and how one does influence the other greatly, be it in a positive or in a negative way.

Challenges of Online Education

Enrollment in online education is at an all time high, according to a recent study by the Sloan Consortium. Based on responses from more than 2,200 colleges and universities across the U.S., the study reveals that 3.2 million students took at least one online course in the fall of 2005, an increase of 850,000 more than the year before. The report is available at www.sloan-c.org/publications/survey/index.asp.

With the rise in popularity of e-learning comes some unique challenges not extant with more traditional classrooms. Students need to be aware of the differences between online and traditional classes and be prepared to make the necessary adjustments. Significant challenges faced by online students include the following:

- Technical problems. Computer hardware and peripheral devices such as printers, modems and routers are not indestructible; as with any other man-made device, they can break down or malfunction at the most inopportune time. In addition to equipment failure, an older computer may be incompatible with some software required for the course. Viruses, trojans, spyware and other malware could infect a computer, causing it to run poorly or not at all. A slow internet connection might cause problems logging into class, retrieving and submitting assignments, and posting to threaded discussions. Any of these problems could cause a great deal of frustration for the student trying to complete course assignments. Therefore, it is important for the student to have access to a backup computer to use in case of equipment malfunction.

- Staying motivated. Going to school always requires a certain level of motivation from a student regardless of whether it’s a "bricks-and-mortar" institution or online class. In a traditional classroom setting, a student has live, face-to-face interaction with the instructor and fellow students -- a camaraderie that may help boost enthusiasm and motivation for the course. In an internet-based class however, there is no live contact with instructor and classmates -- the student works alone in a virtual environment. This lack of live contact may lead to a feeling of isolation, and make it difficult for a student without a high internal commitment or personal drive to stay motivated during the course.

- Self-discipline. As with motivation, a student needs good self-discipline to succeed online. The freedom and flexibility of e-learning is what's so attractive to many people. There's no obligation to login to class at any particular time or place -- you can go to class and do your assignments whenever it's convenient for you. However, this same freedom can lead to procrastination, and cause the unwary or undisciplined student to fall behind in his assignments. Once behind, it can be difficult to catch up.

- It's difficult to improve oral communication skills. There are many classes such as speech, drama, debate, teacher education and so forth that require the student to make oral presentations in front of a group of people. With online courses this is not practical, as the classroom is virtual, and the students are not all gathered together at one time in one room. A student wishing to improve oral communication skills may need to take these classes in a traditional classroom course.

- Classes with lab or hands-on requirements may not be available online. If a lab course cannot be simulated or practically offered online, a student will need to take the course at a local college campus or other location with the necessary facilities for completing the course work.

Students considering taking online courses need to be aware of these and other challenges, and be prepared to meet them in order to be successful online. If any challenge seems insurmountable, the student should reconsider the online option and perhaps take a traditional ground-based course instead.

How To Write A Professional Summary For Your Resume

In the modern job market, employers rely on well authored resumes to sift through potential candidates. In many instances, employers look through job search web sites, like HotJobs.com or Monster.com among others, to find professionals with the abilities, knowledge and experience that fit their requirements. The career search web sites, along with recruitment companies have you apply on their website, require applicants to upload their resume in order to show interest in a specific opportunity. You may not have the chance to send a descriptive email, or a cover letter. That's when you have to double check that your resume conveys your personality in addition to listing your professional and educational experiences and achievements. To do this, you may want to throw in a professional profile or a summary at the beginning of your resume that allows you to market yourself through a narrative description. This section permits your potential employers to see something unique about you and your career path, as well as get a good sampling of your communication skills.

To write a great summary, you should first understand what information should not be conveyed in your resume. Although a summary provides an insight into what is unique and competitive about you, it is not a spot for you to outline any personal information that is not related to your career. Information such as ethnicity, marital status, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and affiliations, etc. should be left out of your resume. Although it may be a reflection of who you are, this information is not relevant to your potential employer in order to pre-screen your qualifications for their current position. In addition, the summary should not contain your previous career experience, unless you can clearly how your background may be of value in your future career goals. Beware of generic statements, like -I am well organized and detail oriented-. Employers wish to hear your unique view points and get a feel of how well you communicate while reading the summary portion of your resume. If you use generalizations about your abilities,it will make the employers believe that you are either have poor communication skills or are using such statements to just add content on your resume.

Your summary may be in the form of a short paragraph or perhaps bulleted statements, containing only a few sentences. There is not a sentence limit, but as a rule do not take up more than one quarter of the page. Your summary should begin by a headline that describes your professional title and you may also include your professional statement. Emphasize your title by featuring the headline in bold and larger font, as it allows your potential employer to grasp who you are quickly. For example:

Sales and Marketing Professional
Acquired New Accounts and Maintained Existing Accounts by Providing Exceptional Customer Service and Satisfaction

Take your time when constructing your title, since it is the first impression your potential employer will have of you.

There are three things a good summary should list:
- Your experiences and skills as they relate to your ideal job
- What you can offer to the team and the open position that no other candidate can
- Your career goals.

Even though your resume summary is written by you, it should be written in third person, and in present tense. Try to think of it as a summary of what one of your best colleagues would say about your professional achievements. Reinforce your title, and sell only the experiences and skills that meet your career objective. If you have a few career objectives, as in you wish to obtain a position in either marketing or public management, compose separate resume summaries for each of the desired objectives. A summary may also contain a concise bulleted section highlighting only a few vital competitive skills that you bring. An example of an effective summary would be as follows.

Successful sales and marketing professional with over 10 years of account management experience. Managed both large and small accounts while maintaining customer satisfaction. Leader in the development and maintenance of new business growth through viral marketing tactics. Able to provide effective and motivating mentoring strategies.

Key competencies include:
o Personalized account development
o Sales forecasting
o Sales account management
o Develope growth strategies

Much like your overall resume, your summary should be written well and does not contain errors. Be sure to double check your summary, and adjust as necessary for the different opportunities of interest. A good summary will help you interest your employer; it should sell you as a primary applicant for the job, along with giving your employer a great first impression.

How To Use Your New Portable Hard Drive

A portable hard drive is relatively easy to install and use. Just plug it in and away you go! At least that's what they told you at the store. It's so simple that apparently you don't even need directions. This must be the reason why they didn't include any in the box. Now that you've got it home, just what exactly are you supposed to do with this thing?

Begin by Plugging in Your Portable Hard Drive
Your portable hard drive, also known as a USB drive, can be plugged into any of the USB ports on your computer. The little wire with the rectangle at the end of it is called a USB cable. It will only fit into a USB port. USB ports can be located on the front, side, and back of your computer. Manufacturers suggest that you use a USB port located on the back of your computer, and avoid plugging the portable hard drive into a USB hub. This practice ensures that you are using the best connection available, and cuts down on possible interference, but can oftentimes be rather inconvenient.

The rule of thumb is this: Plug your USB drive into any slot that it fits into. If the drive appears to be running slowly or doesn't show up on your computer, then try moving it to a slot on the back of your computer.

Now What?
After you've plugged your portable hard drive into your computer, two things will generally happen, indicating that it has been correctly plugged in. Your computer will make a beeping sound and a dialog box will appear in the lower right hand corner of your screen telling you that your computer has found new hardware.

The first time you plug your USB drive into your computer, wait a couple of minutes to let it install any drivers necessary before continuing. It will do this automatically. Once the drivers are installed, double-click your "My Computer" icon. Your portable hard drive will appear as a new drive letter. If it doesn't show up in My Computer, try plugging it into the back of your computer. If it still doesn't show up, you may need to partition and format your drive.

And Away You Go!
The most common uses for your portable hard drive are to either transport or make backups of your documents. These uses do not require that you install any special software. You can copy your files to it just as if it were your local hard drive. You can drag and drop your documents right onto the new drive letter listed in My Computer. You can save and edit your documents directly to your USB drive from your programs and applications. Then, you can bring them with you to other locations or store them in a safe place in case your computer crashes.

Removing Your Portable Hard Drive
Never remove your USB drive from your computer while you are copying files to it. This can corrupt your data and cause you to lose your files. The safest way to remove it is to click on the "Safely Remove Hardware icon" in the lower right hand corner of your taskbar.

4 Personal Benefits for Kids Who Race Motocross

Anyone that has attended a motocross race may get the impression that it is nothing more then organized mayhem. But in fact, there takes a great amount of training, and dedication to become a competent motocross racer. Through the process of becoming a competent motocross racer, riders receive substantial personal benefits, and these benefits have real life value. The personal attributes they acquire from racing transfer positively to school, career, and family life.

Skilled motocross racing entails the development of the following personal attributes:

-Discipline

-Concentration

-Responsibility

-Confidence

Discipline

It is very easy to take for granted the riding skill that is displayed during a motocross race because some riders make it look so easy. The reality is that riders must practice, and practice a great deal if they are going to be competitive at all. Their ability to be competitive is the product of their consistent behavior, or discipline. Riders must sacrifice other activities in order to practice consistently, and develop the skills necessary to continually improve. Discipline is essential, and is reflected in a riders overall racing results.

Motocross riders develop discipline as they dedicate a great amount of time developing the skills needed to win races.

Concentration

One of the crucial skills that must be developed by competent motocross riders is concentration. A few of the elements that can distract a motocross racer are noise, other riders, and track conditions. These elements force riders to focus intently on the race, and their performance in it. This focus would not be possible without excellent concentration skill. As a product of practice, and experience, motocross riders work diligently to increase, and hone their concentration ability.

Racers consistently develop concentration skill as their riding abilities increase through experience, and practice.

Responsibility

Successful motocross racing presents many opportunities for a racer to develop, and express responsibility. Whether it is showing up for practice, representing their team, or caring for the expensive dirt-bike they ride, racers must behave responsibly in order to progressively succeed in racing. At times they must put their own needs, and emotions aside for the benefit of the sport. Of course, a rider probably won't learn to be responsible overnight, but over time if they want to succeed at racing, they will learn to be responsible.

Motocross racing teaches riders to be responsible in a number of areas if they wish to progressively succeed in racing.

Confidence

The more time a rider spends developing the skills needed to become a successful motocross racer, the more self-confidence they experience. They become secure that the skills they have acquired will get the job done, and produce positive results. A personal trust is produced within the confines of the attributes they have learned, and these attributes will affect every area of their life. As a result, they begin to believe in themselves the positive results that can be obtained from their hard work, consistency and courage.

Motocross racing helps riders to develop a personal trust that will translate to success, both on, or off the race track.

Learning to ride a dirt bike is fairly easy, but there are a lot of skills required to master it. Check out GIO Bikes for low priced ATVs for sale and electric scooters for sale.

How to put a Live Streaming Video Webcam on your Website

This article describes in detail how to put a live streaming webcam on your Website. A live streaming webcam is a webcam that broadcasts a continuous video stream with both audio and video. It is just like television. You can see and hear a video broadcast from any page on your website. You will need two things to make your dream of broadcasting come true.

Types of Webcams on the Internet
How are your images going to get to your viewers? There are basically 3 choices. We are going to use the third option. Although this is the most difficult option to configure it provides the best quality webcam image by far.

Use a webcam service such as Yahoo, MSN or AOL. This is the simplest system for the beginner. However, this method requires the other person to install the same service in order to see your camera and usually gives the poorest image quality. There are also a number of pay webcam services but I don't have any experience with them so they won't be covered here.

FTP to your website. Use webcam software that uploads pictures to a website via FTP (File Transfer Protocol). This method is more complicated than #1 and you must have your own website which is FTP accessible. This may be the best method if you have a dial up connection, and expect to have a number of people watching at the same time.

In house server. Use webcam software that uses your computer as a web server. This is not recommended for the beginner because of security issues and complexity of setup. However, this method can usually deliver the best quality images and can offer a much faster image refresh rate than the FTP method, providing you have a high speed Internet connection.

Items Required
Webcam software. I recommend the Cambrosia Webcam Transmitter Software. You can download a free trial version from the Cambrosia Website. This software is easy to use and provides the highest quality video stream available. They also provide free setup support which is very important. As you may need help getting your video stream through your router and firewalls onto the Internet.

Webcam or DV Camera. If you are using the Cambrosia software then most any Digital video cam or webcam purchased will work. The software supports all video devices that use Windows Media Drivers. It is important to verify that the camera does connect to the PC via USB or Firewire. Do not purchase webcams that connect to your computer via Ethernet or wireless as these types of cameras have there own proprietary video webservers inside them and they will not work with Cambrosia Transmitter.

The Procedure
1) Setup the webcam. After you purchase the webcam install the webcam using the instructions that came with the webcam. It is important that you install the device drivers that come with the webcam so that the Cambrosia Webcam Software can automatically find and connect to the video device.

2) The next step after you install and connected your Web Camera is to load the Webcam software. The Cambrosia system has to separate installs that run in sequence. Please be sure that you run both installs before rebooting. Occasionally the install program may ask if you want to reboot after the first install. DO NOT REBOOT until the second part of the install.

3) You are now ready to test the setup. Run the Cambrosia Webcam Software. The first thing you will have to do is log into the Cambrosia Network. Use the User ID and password that you input into the download form when downloaded the free trial. If you did not write down this information do not worry you can get another ID buy going to the support page and asking for another ID from support. This usually takes a few hours to a day. If you are in hurry you can generate another ID by going to the download page and entering a new ID and password then hit the submit button. Please be sure to write down this information as you will need it to connect to the Cambrosia server. See images on the next page:

After about 30 seconds or so you should see a screen that says congratulations.

See below:

4) After you have started the Cambrosia Webcam Transmitter go to the User Settings screen and enter in your profile information (UserID and Password). See picture below:

5) Enter in your settings into the User Settings Window.

6) You are now ready to connect to the Cambrosia server. Once you have connected to the server and your ID has been verified the software will be enabled and you will be able to start your transmission.

7) Click on the Connect to Server button. This will connect you to the Cambrosia server and enable the software.

After successful login buttons will be enabled.

8) Now all you have to do is click on the Live Broadcast Button. If you are connected to the Internet via a cable or DSL connection, click on the Live Broadcast (Cable) button. If you are connected to the Internet by a modem or you have a slow internet connection click on the Live Broadcast (Modem) button.

9) A pop up window will display asking you if you want to fill out the Broadcast Information Form. Just say no for now as you do not need to do this right now.

10) The next screen will be the Audio and Video Device screen. You can use the default settings in most cases. If your video device is listed you can use that as well. See Below:

11) Click Done after you have selected your devices.

12) In about 30 seconds video image should appear in the left view video window. This is the LAN View window. You are 99% of the way there at this point. If video also displays in the WAN view window on the right side you are done. The video stream is getting to the Internet. If the video does not show up on the right side it is because a firewall wall is blocking it.

Firewalls
A firewall helps to limit online access to only those with proper authorization. A firewall acts as a virtual wall that separates a trusted environment (such as a corporate or home network) from an untrusted environment (such as the Internet), by controlling and regulating the traffic between these two environments. The trusted environment is protected from harmful activity (such as viruses, worms or intrusion attacks) initiated on the untrusted side.

There are 2 types of firewalls Hardware based and Software based. You maybe using anywhere from 0 to 3 firewalls at a time on your computer system. If you are connected directly to the internet which almost nobody does anymore, you're system should be streaming without a problem. In most cases people are using the Windows firewall and also have a router. Occasionally people also have a third party firewall such as Mcafee antivirus, Norton Antivirus or Zone Alarm. These firewalls will either have to be turned off or configured to allow the video stream through them. Fortunately, Cambrosia realizes that this can be difficult for the novice user to do so they supply free online or phone support to help you get this done.

You may also have a router and this also has a firewall internally. You will need to log into the router using your web browser and open up the port to allow the stream to get through. Fortunately again, Cambrosia realizes that this can be difficult for the novice user to do so they supply free online or phone support to help you get this done. You can learn more about port forwarding and firewalls by going to http://portforward.com . You can view and set the port that you are going to use for streaming by going to the user Settings screen.

In some cases service providers are filtering or blocking this port so just type in a different port number and click the save button. Whatever port you have set here is the port that will have to be opened inside the router.

Viewing your Webcam on the Internet
There are 3 ways in which the a client /user can view your webcam.

Click on a text link on a webpage that starts the Windows Media player and automatically connects to your video stream.

Place an Windows Media Player ActiveX control on your web page. This embeds a media player into the web page and it starts automatically when you load that page. Most people use this method.

Users have the URL that is given to them by you and they use the Open URL option within Windows Media Player to connect to the stream and view the broadcast.

Post a link on your website.
In order for anyone to view your video all they have to have is the Windows Media Player. If you post the link to your video stream on your website, see examples below, they or you will be able to view the video from a computer anywhere in the world. If they click on the link the Windows Media player will automatically start up and connect to the Video stream.

Text link example

http://24.26.6.118:1111

or mms://24.26.6.118:1111

This one line of code is all that is needed to create a link pointing to your stream.

Your Webcam Name goes here

Copy and paste this snippet of code to create an instance of the Windows Media Player imbedded in a HTML Web Page.

Go to this page to see more examples that other people have used...

http://www.cambrosia.com/CamExamples.php

All the links on this page are to Transmitters using this technology.

You can also just type in the URL into the Media player and it will play it as well. For example start the windows media Player and then select "File", "Open URL" This is really cool. I have even dazzled programmers at Microsoft head Quarters with this trick.

Then type in the URL and click on OK and the media player will connect to the video stream.

While this method is a challenge to configure it is well worth the effort as the results are spectacular. You will have an extremely cool live video stream on your website.

Applications

There are many uses for this type of web application.

Create your own live broadcast station you can host live webcast of any event you desire. Such as:
1. broadcast a live view of your street corner

2. Local rock concert

3. bird feeder

4. Host your own talk show

5. Host your own radio show.

6. Setup a weather station with a live view from your window.

7. If you post your webcam viewer on your home page you can talk to people as they connect to your site. The Cambrosia Transmitter tells you when someone connects to the transmitter. It also gives you their IP address so you can have some idea of where they are located by doing a trace route. When they connect in, you do the trace route on their IP address and then you can greet them. Your voice will be heard on the web page while they are viewing the webcam. I did this during the Hurricanes that we had here in Florida and I had as many as 500 people a day connect into the webcam. I was able to tell what country, state and town they were in. I was able to personally greet them. People were amazed by this.

8. Broadcast weddings

9. If you are a realtor you can have an open house on the Internet

10. Broadcast views of your home or business and watch at work.

11. Broadcast a view from a restaurant.

You get the idea. Just about anything you can imagine can be broadcast live from your personal computer.

Small Business Marketing Consultant - No Experience Necessary!

A question often asked by those wanting to start a consulting business is this: "Can a newcomer become a small business marketing consultant without experience?"

With the right tools, resources and guidance, the answer is a resounding "YES!".

A consultant is paid by the results he brings to a client. This means that you don't have to be an expert in Internet marketing to be a consultant, but you do need to know a few basic terms and techniques to get things done.

Here are some of the services you can provide which don't require any prior experience:

Website creation

Formerly an area dominated by computer programmers and designers, website creation can be anybody's forte these days. You can learn how to create simple web pages from tutorials that come with web developing software, experiment with blog creation applications online or take the express approach by passing on the task to a freelance web designer.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

SEO may not be an exact science but Internet marketing experts who have been testing their systems for a few years can teach you how to improve your client's search rankings. You can sign up for a quick course in SEO, read up on it online, get a mentor or join forums where people discuss techniques and share tips.

Article writing

Perhaps the easiest way to generate cash flow is to provide articles or web content for clients. All you need is a good command of the English language to start writing for a wide market that includes those with existing websites and businesses that are about to go online. Writing is also a source of recurring income as websites need fresh content regularly. You can learn how to leverage this skill from seasoned web content providers as well.

Online marketing

Business owners tend to focus on operations and have little or no knowledge when it comes to Internet marketing. Whatever minor exposure you may have in Internet marketing puts you at a slight advantage which you could develop further by following proven techniques, learning systems or getting expert advice.

Other services that an small business marketing consultant can provide include setting up social media marketing, copywriting, and even Internet business coaching. Your next step after planning your consulting business is to take action immediately. Experience is built over time and with activity. Plunging right in the business is the best way to gain experience while getting paid for it.

How to Write a Book in Five Easy Steps

Because I’ve written more than a 100 books and even been a book publisher, people regularly ask me how one writes a book. I always shrug and say it’s not that hard. But this little article attempts to provide a better answer to the question by describing the easy five-step approach that I use and that I recommend you use.

Step 1: Research Your Topic

Your first step in writing any book is to research your topic. Obviously. To begin any constructive development work on a book—that early thinking about what might make for an interesting book and that planning about what should go into a book—you need to know your topic very well.

This situation leads to a pretty interesting conclusion if you gnaw on this idea a bit. How do you know what you should research if you haven’t yet actually come up with the idea for your book.

Here’s the reality: You can’t know. You can’t practically know what you should research until you possess a pretty good idea about what you should into the book. And yet you can’t have a good idea about your book--a professional quality idea-- until you have your research done. It’s another Catch-22.

Which means that economically, practically, emotionally, the next book you write needs to be one for which you’ve already completed the basic research. You’re only going to be able to come up with a good idea for a book on something when you know the topic well. And you’re only going to be to organize the book’s material into some structure that really works when you know the topic well.

The good news is that for many types of writing—and I argue for anything you should write about—you have largely completed your research. If you’re going to write fiction and use a collage of the people and places and ideas that you’ve collected over your life, your research may be essentially complete. If you’re writing an autobiography, you have completed your research. If you’re going to write about something that’s been part of your work for years, again, you probably have completed your research. The same thing is true if you’re writing about something you teach in college.

Step 2: Come up with the Idea

The second step in the process of writing a book is coming up with an idea for some really useful or interesting book. Based on your research and creativity, you need to come up with a good idea. Here are some tips for how to do this:

Don’t pick something big and obvious…

The first thorough book on any important topic—the last war, the current big business success, the next medical breakthrough—can be a good book that succeeds even to the point of becoming a bestseller. But I respectfully suggest that you leave the big topics to the big writers. The problem with big, well-known topics is that they are well-known. And that means, very probably, that big publishers are already talking to big authors about writing books.

Find your own space…

A related point to this idea of staying away from the really big topics is that you need to find your space. You will find it very hard to succeed—especially as a new writer—if you’re doing what’s already been done. Publishers, booksellers and readers will too easily respond to your book or book idea with the feeling, “Well, yes, but hasn’t [insert name of well-known, bestselling writer here] already done that?” By innovating, however, you may be able to find your own empty space—a niche that isn’t already occupied by some successful book or series or author.

Test the market appeal of your idea…

Here’s another technique for filtering and refining your ideas: You ought to write a press release for your idea to verify that the ultimate book sells well as a concept. A press release is a one-page news story that touts your book and proves to people who will help sell and promote your book—distributors, wholesalers, booksellers and magazine editors—that your book is special and unique and worth looking at. Your press release gives your book a chance to break out from the pack of other books and get noticed. Any idea that can’t be distilled into a great press release is risky. (You can see what book press releases are by visiting publisher web sites.)

Build a list of periodicals that will blurb your book…

If you’re considering a nonfiction book, you ought to be able to come with a list of a handful of special interest periodicals (magazines, newsletters, newspapers, and so forth) that prove people are interested in the topic of your book. If you want to write a book about raising Guinea pigs, conspiracy theories concerning the last president, or monetary policy in emerging economies, for example, one of the best ways you can confidently predict people will buy and read your book is to verify that people are already buying and reading periodicals about the topic.

Try to fit your idea into an existing series…

Here’s another technique. If you can fit your idea into a publisher’s existing series, you ought to try that approach. While of course, we writers find it most satisfying to go our own way creatively, you’ll find it much easier to sell another idea that fits in an existing successful series.

I’ve always written about how to use technology for business and for personal finance. That’s my space. And I’ve got lots of good interesting ideas for books. But my bestselling book has been Quicken for Dummies (Hungry Minds 1993-2005). Would I like to write a different sort of personal financial management book? Yes. But to date Quicken for Dummies has sold one million copies in its numerous editions. The royalties on those salve away any creative disappointment.

Focus on a small niche…

That last number I mentioned, the one million copies of Quicken for Dummies, raises an interesting point. As you consider book writing opportunities, know that you can make good money on a book that sells ten thousand copies. Maybe as much as $15,000. A book that sells twenty thousand copies or more is a big hit for both you and your publisher. And that means your best bet is often to go after niche.

Don’t just write another whodunit mystery, write a whodunit for children. Or better yet, write a whodunit mystery for Christian children or Muslim children or Jewish children. And then promote your book not just like all the other mystery publishers do but also using religious education periodicals that go out to churches or mosques or synagogues.

Verify your idea is big enough for a book…

One final idea and this is especially important for new writers. You need to make sure that your idea is big enough for a book—the content you’ll create is big enough to fill 250 pages or 500 pages or whatever. Experienced authors can do this intuitively. I know which ideas of mine support two hundred pages or four pages of writing. But new writers often can’t gauge this very well. Ever read a book where by the third chapter the author just rehashes material already covered in chapters 1 and 2? That’s a book where the idea wasn’t big enough.

Especially for nonfiction books, you ought to try writing a couple of example chapters—maybe chapters 1 and 4—to make sure you’ve got a big topic. Your chapters don’t need to be pristine or perfect. But make sure that you can write a couple of good, rich chapters that aren’t redundant. When you’re done with those chapters, look at what other topics you want to cover and make sure that there’s still stuff left for at least two or three more interesting chapters. A bit of rehashing is okay, I think. But you don’t want people reaching for the television’s remote control in the second chapter.

Step 3: Create a Rough Draft Outline

After you have your idea, I’m going to argue that your third step is to create a rough draft outline. This rough draft outline isn’t the detailed outline that your high school English teacher talked about. A rough draft outline doesn’t go into exquisite detail about your book.

A rough draft outline, instead, just lists chapters and provides some idea of what goes into each chapter. Perhaps the outline includes just a few sentences about what you plan to stick into a particular chapter.

Because this seems very strange to writers who have only written short works, let me explain why the rough draft outline works. At the point when you’re ready to organize the content at a very granular level—when you truly know exactly what you want to say in a chapter—you might was well spend a few more minutes and get down the words. The composing doesn’t take much time at all. You don’t need to worry about redundancy across chapters as long as you’ve got a good idea of the boundaries that separate chapters.

Step 4: Create Your Rough Manuscript Draft

After you complete your rough draft outline, you should begin writing the chapters of your book. Sometimes, you’ll flesh out the rough draft outline a little in order to begin writing. Sometimes admittedly, you’ll need to collect just a bit more data or do a small amount of research to fill in some hole. But don’t delay. You want to get into a situation where you can produce large chunks of writing as quickly and easily (and, yes, as sloppily and slipshod) as possible.

The big challenge of writing a book is the book’s size. What you need to do first, therefore, is get your book in rough draft form. Worrying about grammar and spelling and word choice at the very least slows you down. At the very worst, this worry prevents you from finishing your book. Therefore, write your rough draft as fast as you can. Hurry along without concern about whether you’re being sloppy. Don’t worry about spelling. Don’t worry about quality. Don’t worry if you’re redundant or obtuse or meandering. You can and will fix all of this later.

What you have to do is get the rough draft manuscript done. That’s the Holy Grail. And, paradoxically, worrying about things like grammar actually impedes your progress.

Step 5: Self-edit Your Rough Draft Manuscript

After you complete your rough draft, you need to ruthlessly self-edit your rough draft. If you can cut some word or sentence without changing the meaning, cut. If you can tighten some description, tighten. If you can remove a section or a chapter without taking away from the book’s purpose, remove.

New writers commonly limit their self-editing. They’ve spent perhaps months finishing up the book. Writing one hundred thousand words has seemed like building the Great Wall of China. The prospect of ruthlessly hacking away at all those words is sickening. The effort of all those early mornings or late evenings?

And yet you have to do this. The biggest mistake you can make in your writing is thinking that everything you put down on paper is worth some reader’s time. It isn’t. Some large percentage of what you or I roughly draft is garbage. And if you or I don’t clean the garbage out of our books, it spoils the book.

One final tip about self-editing: Respect your reader. The point of you writing a book isn’t to express your feelings or share your expertise or to (finally) impress your father. You might get these things indirectly. But they aren’t the point of a book.

The point of a book is to supply a reader with useful ideas or information or literary art or good entertainment. It’s all about the reader. And when we writers lose sight of this point, bad things happen to our writing. And our books aren’t very good. In our self editing, mostly what we’re doing is making sure that everything we put on the page is there for the reader.

Closing Comments

When you distill it down to just its core ideas, this article doesn’t actually say that much. I suggested that you write about something you already know. I suggested some tips for identifying which of your ideas is good enough to turn into a book. And then I provided some advice about how to grind out a book—advice which largely boils down to outline very roughly, write very quickly, and ruthlessly self-edit.

Nursery Rhymes For Children

Children are taught certain traditional poems or songs at the nursery level. These are called nursery rhymes. Nursery rhyme's lyrics are written to rhyme, and are set to lovely tunes - which are immensely enjoyable for children. Nursery rhymes also double up as learning aids for children, for vocabulary building and basic counting skills. These rhymes are also taught to children with certain actions and dancing steps, to develop their motor skills.

Children all over the world grow up on nursery rhymes. These songs linger in their minds, to become an intrinsic part of their life and character in later years. Different cultures have their own nursery rhymes. They are mostly passed down the generation from parent to child or teacher to student - orally. However the most popular nursery rhymes which are sung all over the world are in the English language. The most well known among them, have their roots in 17th century Europe. Some are even older. For instance, "Sing a song of six pence", goes down to the middle ages.

America also gave its share of nursery rhymes to the world's children. One good example of an American nursery rhyme is "Mary had a little lamb". It is believed that the practice of singing nursery rhymes, started at a time when free speech was prohibited by law. Nursery rhymes first emerged as oral allegorical political cartoons to entertain children and express popular public sentiment. For instance, the common rhyme of "Jack and Jill" where Jack falls down and breaks his crown comes across as little violent for young children and must have had some political undertones. "Ring a ring o Roses" also popular as" Ring around the Rosie" is supposed to be a metaphor, referring to the Great Plague of London. It is about the healing quality of flowers and herbs. Similarly the popular nursery rhyme "Pop goes the weasel "is supposed to be about silk weavers who work with their bobbins or shuttles.

Song popular nursery rhymes which are sung all over the world are - Hey Diddle Diddle, Ring a Ring o Roses, Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, little Jack Horner sat in a corner, Jack and Jill went up the hill, Sing a song of sixpence, One two buckle my shoe, Mary had a little lamb. The most well known series of American nursery rhyme is that of Mother Goose.

Nursery rhymes have a cathartic effect on children. They help the little populace of the globe; deal with imaginary situations of violence and danger. They teach children to resolve their psychological issues in a healthy way. Last but not least, nursery Rhymes are an indispensable, delightful and educative aid for children all over the world.

Just like other children Indian children too love to listen to short stories and nursery rhymes Check out for more on these links.
