Nursery Rhymes For Children

Children are taught certain traditional poems or songs at the nursery level. These are called nursery rhymes. Nursery rhyme's lyrics are written to rhyme, and are set to lovely tunes - which are immensely enjoyable for children. Nursery rhymes also double up as learning aids for children, for vocabulary building and basic counting skills. These rhymes are also taught to children with certain actions and dancing steps, to develop their motor skills.



Children all over the world grow up on nursery rhymes. These songs linger in their minds, to become an intrinsic part of their life and character in later years. Different cultures have their own nursery rhymes. They are mostly passed down the generation from parent to child or teacher to student - orally. However the most popular nursery rhymes which are sung all over the world are in the English language. The most well known among them, have their roots in 17th century Europe. Some are even older. For instance, "Sing a song of six pence", goes down to the middle ages.



America also gave its share of nursery rhymes to the world's children. One good example of an American nursery rhyme is "Mary had a little lamb". It is believed that the practice of singing nursery rhymes, started at a time when free speech was prohibited by law. Nursery rhymes first emerged as oral allegorical political cartoons to entertain children and express popular public sentiment. For instance, the common rhyme of "Jack and Jill" where Jack falls down and breaks his crown comes across as little violent for young children and must have had some political undertones. "Ring a ring o Roses" also popular as" Ring around the Rosie" is supposed to be a metaphor, referring to the Great Plague of London. It is about the healing quality of flowers and herbs. Similarly the popular nursery rhyme "Pop goes the weasel "is supposed to be about silk weavers who work with their bobbins or shuttles.



Song popular nursery rhymes which are sung all over the world are - Hey Diddle Diddle, Ring a Ring o Roses, Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, little Jack Horner sat in a corner, Jack and Jill went up the hill, Sing a song of sixpence, One two buckle my shoe, Mary had a little lamb. The most well known series of American nursery rhyme is that of Mother Goose.



Nursery rhymes have a cathartic effect on children. They help the little populace of the globe; deal with imaginary situations of violence and danger. They teach children to resolve their psychological issues in a healthy way. Last but not least, nursery Rhymes are an indispensable, delightful and educative aid for children all over the world.
